okay, a bit better this morning. i confess i did pull out the heel flap and heel turn, convinced i messed up WS stitching and got an extra row in there. don’t think i dod.
but check out this lovely heel turn:
so looking at things again, i think the magic loop/two circular approach is just a wee bit funky (duh), and the person writing the instruction is most likely not working their sock their way and thus, confusing you because they are an idiot. i’m going to have to ignore that K1, p2 for the instep and actually match what i have on the needles already.
so here goes nothing:
looks like it should! took some crazy re-shifting of stitched mid needle (certainly something the instructions did not go into), but i see a light at the end of the tunnel.

so practice sock v.2.0, the “magic loop” method. all going smoothly though cuff, heel flap and heel turn. but i’m at a road block with picking up the gusset stitches, which are quickly followed in the direction by P1, K2, Ps, etc. across the instep — all on needle 1, even though the instep stitches are on needle 2.
problem is my instep stitches begin K1. so where did i get backasswards?

… she was searching for a balance between life and needlework. she still hasn’t found it. but. i’m tired of leaving this neglected (::insert hysterical laughter::), though it most likely will become abandoned again.
but then maybe not. because i had a small bit of inspiration and have now found a new way to waste money.
yeah, i know. it’s not hard. but it finally happened, the thing to push me over the edge on knitting and turn me into a crash yarn stash woman.
socks.
i knew this would happen when i finally dived in and gave one a go. knew it, knew it, knew it. which is why i resisted for so long. but there was really nothing else i wanted to knit. sweaters and the such simply don’t appeal.. too large and bulky, take too long, then end up with something i’m scared to wear for fear of ruining it.
but socks! small and portable, and stripey yarn! wool!
when test sock v.1.0 here came off the three &^%$ingdouble pointed needles (bloody hell!), i said i was immediately doing a second test sock v.2.0 because screw that multiple needle crap and show me the magic loop. but this meant i needed to order circulars in the proper size to do it.
and it also meant that i needed to find the right stripey yarn for the Real Sock (v.0.1) that would follow. i knew what i wanted, one of those fair-isle mock striping gorgeous creatures, but wool and not the above acrylic stuff. i needed real yarn.
and after trolling google today at lunch, i knew i found the right stuff when it was priced at $24 a ball. now we’re talking!
but after pushing google a bit more until it bled, i found the $24 opal gorgeous drool worthy stuff on sale for $9.50 a ball.
and now i’m very impatiently awaiting my needles and ::cough:: 7 skeins of pretties. want now, dammit!

nothing like waiting until the last minute to send off my paltry offering to the Caps to the Capitol project, but they made it out yesterday. look at that, me being political and writing a letter the president. goes to prove that if i involved needlework, i’m there.

the shrug, finally finished. hard to see here the large shawl collar that ties down around the waist.
once size fits all so, it is a bit huge and loose on me, but it works since i find myself putting it on over hoodies and sweaters anyway. v. warm and cozy and i appreciate the super long sleeves with thumbholes.

i really wish i had more to say these days. but that arthritis flare up i had been feeling has only continued to get worse, to the point that even computer surfing is painful.
i am completely antsy without being able to do needlework. off to read. books that is. you remember those big old-fashioned things, right?

yeesh, i knew that counter for my PoA Gryffindor House scarf was off. i kept thinking if i was 20% complete, i was going to have the stubbiest little scarf ever. of course if i do the math correctly, i am no where near as far along as i thought i was. this after i have found lovely new patterns for next! in the pile.
where i will get all this time to do any of this is beyond me. all i have managed of late is an hour or so of knitting in the evenings. i have wanted to pull out the needlework again, but the pyramid etui is just far too thought intensive and low-light friendly for me to get excited about. besides, my right hand has been wonderfully swollen and stiff from overuse at work (oh, how i love all that keyboard work to do!). i have tried to cut back on all other computer time, but still no abatement in the swelling or pain. at least i have discovered i can knit with a wrist brace on. i’m setting no land speed records with it, but at least i’m able to get a little relaxing in.
so i do have a picture of progress on the PoA scarf before i popped a dvd in last night and worked some more.
next weekend i hope to be allowed more home computer time to update pictures of the etui.

but as you can see, things have changed around here. so now instead up updating the rotation stitching with pictures, reporting on picking up my pyramid etui again, or even finding stitching time this weekend, i will be playing with code.
computers eat too much of my stitching time.
but by way of a quick knitting update, i have discovered i can at least knit while watching a sub-titled movie. yet i cannot crochet and read the screen at the same time. anyway, i pulled apart my few rows on the harry potter scarf because i did not like the needles (metal, and too short!), and restarted on larger needles, but i like the result more. screw gauge, it’s a scarf! besides, that was looking like it was sized for a child before.
mind you, last night i was whipping along into row 25 (not bad for 2 one-hour stints) and realized that no, i not have some wiggly tube on the needles that wanted to flip. i had instead and actual mobius twist going on, and no matter how you turn, twist, flip, pull or invert, the only way to rid yourself of it is to rip out all your work.
guess what i restart tonight. well, third time’s a charm, n’est?

time to confess i haven’t been up to much stitching lately. i’m at a point where time seems to be slipping away from me. i have managed to knock out some more crochet scarves and hats for charity from the odd lots of lion brand homespun i picked up.
also did a knit version of the very simple hat for practice purposes. it was enlightening in revealing:
1. homespun handles fine for crochet but is downright awful for knitting.
2. double crochet produces the width and length needed for a hat in no time, while garter stitch takes about ten time the time;
3. circular needles are even better than flexi end straights; and
4. binding off effectively kills all stretch and give to a hat band.
i’m now playing with a design for a crochet hood. i found a free pattern and had set it aside. when i finally decided this weekend i wanted to make said old fashioned hood, i pulled out the pattern and then realized is was written in some form of psychotic gibberish. honestly, “gauge = whatever you want”, “chain what length you need to reach from neck to top of head, but don’t measure the chain“, and the pattern of the rows was stated in about six different variant.
so i basically looked at the finished style of hood (think old fashioned victorian skating costume) and had proceeded out on my own, even playing with back loop/front loop/both loops to create a cute texture. i can’t wait to see how it turns out.
i pledge to write readable directions to my version when i finish.

peaceful night ornament

ornament fever for 2005 has begun. i started off my new year by spending it watching movies and stitching. decided i would treat myself to some one over one therapy with this little one. started january 1, 2005. finished january 1, 2005.
now i just have to worry about the actually finishing. think i will put that off until some time in november. i don’t want to completely through the cosmos off at this point by managing to learn to knit and work the sewing machine at the same time.
